Hundreds of thousands of residents in southwestern Japan face mandatory evacuations and severe travel disruptions as Typhoon Dolphin approaches with bringing violent winds and heavy rainfall and high waves.

The Category 1 typhoon with packing sustained winds of 144 kph and gusts up to 198 kph is currently tracking toward the islands between Kyushu and Okinawa. In response, authorities have ordered nearly 260,000 residents across Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures to evacuate. The storm has already caused airlines to cancel over 500 flights and prompted Toyota to suspend operations at nine local factories.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that Dolphin is expected to maintain its strength, posing a significant risk of structural damage. Forecasters also cautioned that a "linear rain band" a concentrated zone of intense thunderstorms could develop also carrying the threat of severe, sudden flooding.

The massive storm is enveloping the southernmost main island of Kyushu, including Kumamoto prefecture. This creates a compounding crisis for Kumamoto which is still recovering from a 7.1-magnitude earthquake last week that left approximately 6,700 people displaced and living in evacuation centers.

Further complicating the emergency response, the JMA has issued heatstroke warnings for the affected regions with temperatures expected to soar to 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit). Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow emergency protocols as they navigate these overlapping natural hazards.
