Police Warn Against Rumors Targeting High-Ranking Officials and State Figures

The Bangladesh Police have warned the public against a deliberate disinformation campaign targetting the force and key state officials on social media, cautioning that strict legal action will be pursued if such activities continue.

​The warning was issued in an official statement posted on the verified Facebook page of the Bangladesh Police on Friday.

Expressing deep concern, the police statement noted that a vested group has been systematically spreading false, fabricated, misleading, and provocative content on social platforms like Facebook to malign senior police officers and prominent government figures. Bangladesh Police strongly condemned and protested these malicious efforts.

​According to the statement, "deposed fascist forces" and their local and international accomplices are orchestrating this campaign to create public confusion, destabilize law and order, demoralize the police force, and tarnish the government’s image.

​The police attributed this surge in rumors to their current crackdown on banned political organizations and their refusal to entertain illegal requests from opportunistic quarters. Officials revealed that evidence exists showing these agitators are linked to various criminal offenses, have actively lobbied for unlawful favors across government agencies, and have even attempted extortion by demanding money to stop spreading rumors.

​Bangladesh Police urged citizens not to believe, share, or propagate misleading or provocative content online. Requesting the public to act as responsible citizens, the authority emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant to prevent the spread of rumors.

The statement concluded with a stern warning that continued engagement in such defamatory campaigns will result in strict legal proceedings under existing laws.
