A day-long orientation program for newly appointed midwives was held on Thursday to improve maternal and reproductive healthcare in the remote areas of Bandarban.

Organized by the Bandarban Hill District Council (BHDC) the initiative aims to ensure safe institutional maternity services for underprivileged women across the region. The program is part of a broader regional project implemented by the BHDC, with direct support from the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the local NGO 'Green Hill'.

During the event at the BHDC conference room, Md. Monirul Islam, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs distributed appointment letters to the new midwives as the chief guest.

In his address Islam highlighted a critical gap in regional development. "While various development projects have been undertaken since the Chittagong Hill Tracts Agreement the health sector's scope has comparatively lagged" he noted. "The ministry is implementing this special project alongside the District Council and UNFPA to ensure disadvantaged women in remote hilly areas finally receive essential reproductive healthcare."

The orientation was presided over by BHDC Chairman Professor Thanjama Lusai. Special guests included Dr. Sanaipru Tripura, Convener of the Health Department Mohammad Nazrul Islam Chief Executive Officer and senior officials from the Family Planning Department and Green Hill.
