Another injured person has died following a clash between two BNP-backed factions in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna, raising the death toll to two.
The deceased, Munsur Khan (60), died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 3:00pm on Tuesday (March 24), police said. He was a resident of Bhitbila village.
Earlier, a housewife, China Khatun (40), was killed after being shot during the clash on Monday morning. Both victims were reportedly supporters of the Islam Pramanik group.
Officer-in-Charge of Sujanagar Police Station, Khaim Uddin, confirmed that 12 people have been detained so far in connection with the incident. He said no formal case had been filed as of Tuesday evening, but legal action will follow once a complaint is received.
According to police and local sources, the violence stemmed from a long-standing dispute between two local BNP factions — one led by Rafiul Islam Raja and the other by Islam Pramanik — over control and influence in the area.
Tensions escalated after a confrontation between supporters of the two groups on Sunday night. On Monday morning, clashes broke out in Bhitbila Paschimpara village under Manikhat union.
Witnesses said both sides used locally made weapons, and gunfire was reported during the clash. At least 10 others were injured. Several houses were also vandalised during the violence.
Police have since deployed additional forces in the area to maintain order.
