An officer-in-charge (OC) and a police constable were injured early Thursday when a mob, allegedly mobilized via a local mosque's loudspeaker, attacked a police patrol in the Doppara area of Sujanagar upazila.
Police allege the attack was orchestrated by local activists of the banned Awami League. According to law enforcement, patrols were dispatched to the Mathurapur area following a tip-off about planned sabotage capitalizing on late-night crowds watching a World Cup football match. Upon arrival at around 4:30 am, an announcement from a mosque microphone reportedly summoned hundreds of armed individuals who vandalized two police vehicles and assaulted the officers.
Sujanagar Police Station OC Muzaffar Hossain and Constable Sabuj are currently receiving treatment at a local private hospital confirmed Pabna Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Sufi Ullah. Police accused Abdul Wahab president of the banned Awami League's Sujanagar unit, of leading the ambush.
Wahab firmly denied the allegations, calling them baseless. "I cannot even visit the area due to ongoing police operations," he stated. According to Wahab, local youths were cooking a post-match meal when police arrived and arbitrarily detained 10 to 15 people. This prompted residents to resist the arrests, resulting in a scuffle where the officers were injured.
SP Sufi Ullah stated that legal action against those involved in the incident is currently underway.
