


Allegations of vandalism, looting and harassment of women have surfaced in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla, centring on a local political dispute.
The incident reportedly took place in Jugirhat village under Munshirhat union. During a visit to the area on Tuesday, locals expressed anger and concern over the situation.
According to a complaint filed with the police and local sources, a group led by local Awami League leader Manohar Ali, along with several associates, had been threatening and assaulting Hafez Majumder and his family over a prolonged political dispute.
Locals alleged that on November 22 last year, Hafez Majumder’s father, Shafiqur Rahman Majumder, was seriously injured in an attack near a mosque. He later died from his injuries. A case was filed with the police in connection with the incident.
In a fresh incident, the group allegedly attacked the family’s house around midnight on Friday, vandalising property and looting valuables. Family members also accused one of the attackers of attempting to assault women in the house and snatching a gold chain at weapon-point.
Police said they rushed to the scene after receiving a call to the national emergency number 999 and brought the situation under control.
Contacted for comment, Manohar Ali said he had also filed a complaint and that the matter is under investigation.
Sub-Inspector Shamsul Arefin of Chauddagram Model Police Station said police have visited the site and legal action will be taken based on the investigation findings.
