The European Union (EU) will deploy a large, 200-member mission to monitor Bangladesh’s upcoming 13th national election and constitutional referendum. Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs, a Member of the European Parliament, described the February 12 polls as "historic" for the country's democratic journey.
Ijabs shared these details today after meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna.
This marks the first full EU election observation mission in Bangladesh since 2008. The EU did not send observers during the previous 16 years. The mission will include 200 delegates, with 56 long-term observers already arriving to cover all 64 districts.
The team will evaluate the electoral process, the "level playing field" for candidates, and the conduct of the "Yes/No" referendum on the July National Charter.
The EU mission emphasized its commitment to independence and non-interference, aiming to boost public confidence in the electoral outcome.
According to Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, the EU’s decision to send such a large team reflects Bangladesh's importance as a trade partner and a "close friend." Ivars Ijabs noted a strong "national enthusiasm" for the vote, following three previous parliamentary elections that were widely criticized for lacking credibility.
The election and referendum are scheduled for February 12, 2026, under the interim government.
