U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that high-stakes negotiations to end the ongoing Iran war could resume in Pakistan within the next 48 hours.

This potential diplomatic restart follows a volatile weekend in which the collapse of initial talks led Washington to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

“You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days,” Trump told reporters, signaling a renewed inclination toward a mediated settlement.

Blockade and the Strait of Hormuz

The conflict which escalated on February 28 has seen Iran effectively close the Strait of Hormuz to most vessels demanding control and fees for passage. In response the U.S. military launched a blockade on Monday to stop traffic into Iran’s ports. While the move initially spiked oil prices signs of a return to the negotiating table helped calm markets with benchmark prices dipping back below $100 per barrel on Tuesday.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the blockade is being "enforced impartially" against vessels bound for Iran. In the first 24 hours at least six merchant ships complied with U.S. directions and turned away though reports indicate some Iran-linked vessels successfully crossed the Strait on Tuesday.

Israel-Lebanon Talks: A "Historic Opportunity"

Parallel to the Iran crisis, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in Washington as a “historic opportunity.” Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, expressed hope that these discussions would end the "suffering of the Lebanese people," particularly in the south where war erupted between Israel and Hezbollah last month. Rubio cautioned that while complexities remain the goal is to establish a framework for a lasting peace.

The Path Forward

Despite the U.S. blockade and angry rhetoric from Tehran which has called the blockade a "violation of sovereignty" officials from the Gulf, Pakistan and Iran suggest teams could return to Islamabad later this week.

The survival of a two-week ceasefire which currently has one week remaining hinges on these upcoming discussions.
