The 95th birth anniversary of legendary actress Suchitra Sen was observed at her ancestral home in Pabna.
The Suchitra Sen Memorial Preservation Council organized a wreath-laying ceremony, a discussion, and a cake-cutting event to mark the occasion.
On Monday (April 6), the program began with paying homage to a mural of Suchitra Sen at her ancestral home on Hemsagar Lane in Gopalpur Mohalla, Pabna Municipality. The ceremony was followed by a cake-cutting attended by the council members and local cultural figures.
The discussion meeting was chaired by Ram Dulal Bhowmik, Acting President of the Suchitra Sen Memorial Preservation Council, and moderated by General Secretary Naresh Madhu. Speakers included ABM Fazlur Rahman, former president of the Pabna Press Club and executive member of the council; Zafar Sadek, council advisor and agriculturist; office secretary Shishir Islam; and Kanij Fatema.
Other attendees included retired assistant headmaster of Pabna Zilla School Arup Kumar Kundu, cultural activist Hasan Mahmud, Sabera Sultana, Fazlul Haque Suman, and others.
The speakers expressed disappointment that Suchitra Sen’s ancestral house has not yet been restored or converted into a memorial museum. “No work has been done to establish a Suchitra Sen memorial museum in the house. The matter is being delayed day by day,” they said. They called for the house to be transformed into an international-standard museum honoring the actress.
Born on April 6, 1931, Suchitra Sen, whose real name was Rama Dasgupta, spent her childhood in Pabna. Her father, Karunamoy Dasgupta, was a school headmaster. She was the fifth child of her parents, Karunamoy and Indira Devi.
Before the 1947 partition, she moved to Kolkata with her family. Suchitra Sen began her film career in 1952 and acted in a total of 60 films, including 53 Bengali films and seven Hindi films. She remains a beloved figure, remembered for her unique acting and lasting impact on Bengali cinema.
