A group of thieves infiltrated the 150-year-old Kali temple located in Sadarghat, Chittagong city, and made off with gold jewelry and cash from the donation box. The incident took place on Saturday night, November 8.
It has been reported that the thieves accessed the temple by climbing onto its tin roof and breaking the glass ventilator to gain entry. They took a gold and silver crown weighing four bhari, earrings, a chain with a locket weighing two bhari, a silver necklace weighing four bhari, a gold locket weighing four annas, and the donation box, which contained cash.
Temple attendant Sana Bhattacharya stated that the theft was discovered when the temple door was opened around 7 am. It is estimated that there may have been 60 to 70 thousand taka contributed by devotees in the donation box. The main door was secured. I suspect the thief may have climbed onto the roof of the adjacent house and broken the ventilator to gain access. Kotwali Police Station OC Abdul Karim mentioned that they have examined the scene.
The thief remains unidentified due to the absence of CCTV cameras. The temple management has lodged a complaint, and an investigation into the theft is underway.
