The BNP has nominated Ershad Ullah as their candidate for the Chattogram-8 (Boalkhali-Chandgaon-Bayezid partial) constituency, and he has tragically been shot dead.
He was fatally shot during a public meeting near the East Mosque in the Hamzarbagh area of Panchlaish Ward No. 3 in Chattogram city on Wednesday evening, November 5. He has since been taken to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram in critical condition.
In a related incident, the controversial figure Sarwar Hossain Babla was shot dead at the scene. Babla was present at the public meeting and was known to be a supporter of the recently denied nomination of BNP Chairperson and leader Lion Aslam Chowdhury.
Earlier this year, in late March, a group targeted Sarwar in the Chandanpura area of the city, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to two others, including Sarwar himself.
Reports indicate that followers of the infamous terrorist Sajjad Hossain, also known as Chhota Sajjad, who is currently incarcerated, were involved in this incident. It is suspected that the attack on Ershad Ullah may also be linked to the same gang.
Babla, the deceased, was a notorious criminal with a police record listing 17 cases against him, including five for murder. Additionally, another associate of Sarwar Babla, the notorious terrorist Ali Akbar, known as 'Dhakaiya Akbar', was also killed by rivals in the Patenga Samudrasaikat area of the city in late May this year.
Like the recently deceased Babla, Akbar was a resident of the Bayezid area and had 10 cases against him, including charges of murder, arms possession, and extortion. Following the 'July Uprising' on August 5, 2025, when terrorists supported by the Awami League went into hiding, control of Chattogram's underground world shifted to various groups.
With the recent changes in the political landscape, terrorists are becoming increasingly active in Chattogram, receiving shelter and support from politicians. Under their umbrella, activities such as occupation, extortion, and terrorism are occurring. Concurrently, there has been a rise in the use of illegal weapons.
