Artificial intelligence has achieved a new milestone in the music industry as Xania Monet became the first known AI artiste to garner enough radio play to appear on a Billboard chart.
Monet, who debuted her first songs in the summer of 2025, saw her track "Let Go, Let God" enter the Hot Gospel Songs chart and "How Was I Supposed to Know" land on the Hot R&B Songs chart. Created by poet Telisha Nikki Jones using the generative AI music tool Suno, Monet is described as "an AI figure presented as a contemporary R&B vocalist." Jones writes the lyrics, while Suno produces the tracks.
Despite being virtual, Monet is growing in popularity, boasting over 146,000 Instagram followers. Her manager, Romel Murphy, defended the trend, stating, "AI doesn't replace the artiste. It's a new frontier," though he acknowledged concerns. Billboard noted that at least six AI or AI-assisted artistes have entered its charts recently, though the true number is difficult to determine.
The rise of AI music has sparked controversy among human musicians, with singer Kehlani publicly criticizing the trend, arguing that AI artistes are gaining massive deals without doing the traditional work.
