India has approved its first dengue vaccine Takeda's QDENGA (TAK-003). The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) cleared the vaccine marking a major public health milestone for a country that bears nearly one-third of the global dengue burden.

What is QDENGA? QDENGA is a live-attenuated vaccine designed to protect against all four strains of the dengue virus. Crucially it does not require a pre-vaccination blood test to check for prior dengue infection. This eliminates a major hurdle seen with older vaccines like Dengvaxia, making large-scale public vaccination drives much easier. The vaccine is administered in two doses, given three months apart.

How Effective is It? Following a 4.5-year clinical trial involving over 20,000 children and adolescents, the vaccine proved highly effective. The results demonstrated 84% protection against dengue-related hospitalization. 61% protection against virologically confirmed dengue overall.

Manufacturing and Affordability While an official price has not yet been announced, costs may remain accessible. Takeda has partnered with Hyderabad-based manufacturer Biological E to produce up to 50 million doses annually. This local production is expected to stabilize supply and lower costs for the broader public.

Not a Silver Bullet Public health experts warn that vaccination cannot completely eliminate dengue due to rapid urbanization climate change and expanding mosquito habitats. QDENGA should be viewed as a powerful new tool that must be combined with traditional mosquito control, the elimination of breeding sites, and early diagnosis.
