"Double carbing" means eating two high-carbohydrate foods in a single meal. Common examples include eating rice with bread pasta with garlic bread or a burger with fries. While occasional double carbing is harmless for healthy individuals regularly eating multiple refined carbohydrates can negatively impact metabolism weight and blood sugar control.

How It Impacts Fat Burning According to Dr. Nishant Raizada, Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Amrita Hospital combining high-carb foods causes a large spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. While insulin helps transport glucose into cells it also temporarily stops lipolysis—the process where the body breaks down stored fat for energy.

Simply put, after a heavy carbohydrate meal your body prioritizes burning glucose instead of fat. When these high-carb high-calorie meals become a daily habit alongside a sedentary lifestyle the body gradually loses its efficiency in switching between burning carbs and fat.

Health Risks of Frequent Double Carbing Consuming multiple refined carbohydrates often results in a calorie-dense meal that lacks filling nutrients like protein and fibre.

Consistently eating excess calories in this manner can lead to

Weight gain and increased belly fat Insulin resistance A higher risk of type 2 diabetes Fatty liver disease

These risks compound significantly when poor diet is paired with low physical activity.

Balance your plate Pair carbohydrates with lean protein and healthy fats. Upgrade your carbs Choose whole grains and fibre-rich legumes over refined grains (like white bread and pasta). Add vegetables Include a large portion of vegetables in your meal to increase fibre intake.

Engage in physical activity after meals to help your body manage blood sugar spikes.
