Just when it seemed football fans could begin counting down to one of 2026's most enticing international soccer matchups, fresh uncertainty is swirling around the Finalissima, the showpiece event that would pit Copa America champions Argentina against reigning European title-holders Spain.
The much-anticipated clash is set to feature two of the most compelling figures in global football: Argentina's Lionel Messi, widely considered the greatest player of all time, and Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who many believe could be his heir apparent.
Scheduled for Lusail Stadium in Doha - the same venue where Messi lifted the World Cup in 2022 - the match was originally planned for Saturday, March 28, 2026.
But that date is no longer locked in. FIFA is now considering moving the game up by one day, to Friday, March 27, in an effort to maximise global visibility and build a full weekend of fanfare around the fixture.
Yet beyond this minor adjustment lies a bigger issue that could force FIFA's hand in a much more significant way: Spain's World Cup qualifying status is not yet secure.
