


Former minister and veteran Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed passed away at approximately 3:30 pm on Monday (June 1) while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He was 82.
The hospital authorities and his family confirmed his demise.
Tofail Ahmed had been suffering from age-related complications, including long-term paralysis. He was admitted to Square Hospital in critical condition on September 28 and was later placed on life support. His son-in-law, Dr. Touhiduzzaman Tuhin, confirmed that he breathed his last at the hospital. He is survived by his daughter and numerous well-wishers.
Born on October 22, 1943, in Koralia village under Bhola Sadar Upazila, Tofail Ahmed rose to national prominence as a student leader. He served as the Vice President (VP) of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) from 1967 to 1969, playing a historic role in the 1969 mass uprising.
In the 1970 elections, at age 27, he was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan. Over his extensive political career, he was elected to parliament nine times and served as a cabinet minister across multiple terms. He was also a member of the advisory council of the Awami League.
