Despite promises of rural development, a 4.5-kilometer road in Khulna’s Paikgachha upazila has become a source of daily suffering for thousands. The South Amirpur-Bainbaria road, located in Ward 7 of Garikhali Union, is nearly unusable due to prolonged neglect and lack of maintenance.
A spot visit revealed deep potholes and severe damage along the stretch. In many sections, the brick soling has completely washed away, leaving the road dangerously uneven. Even light rain causes localized waterlogging, while the monsoon turns the entire route into a muddy trap.
The road—stretching from Debabrata's shop, through South Amirpur, to the bridge near the Bainbaria Police Camp—is the primary transport route for the area. Students, farmers, and business owners rely on it daily. The dilapidated conditions severely disrupt the transport of agricultural goods to market and make emergency medical travel exceptionally difficult.
Local resident Sumen Mondal expressed his frustration: “This road is a reflection of our suffering. We have only heard assurances for years, but nothing is actually done. Traveling here during the monsoon is a nightmare. We want to see real work, not just talk.”
Another resident echoed this sentiment, noting that politicians make big promises regarding the road's repair during elections, but abandon the issue once voting ends.
Repeated phone calls to Garikhali Union Parishad Chairman Abdus Salam Keru for comment on the road's maintenance schedule went unanswered.
