Police recovered the heavily decomposed body of 75-year-old Nurjahan Begum from a flat in Dhaka’s Mirpur-11 on Sunday night. Pallabi Police suspect she died at least a week before her body was discovered. Officers arrived at the C Block residence after receiving a call via the 999 National Emergency Service.
According to Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Hasan Basir, Nurjahan lived in a separate room within her daughter’s home. After days of receiving no response from her mother, the daughter called a nurse, who discovered the body and alerted authorities.
The room was found in a highly unsanitary condition, littered with garbage, strongly indicating long-term neglect. OC Basir noted that the family failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the timeline or circumstances of her death.
Police investigations revealed that Nurjahan's children are highly established professionals. Her three sons include a government joint secretary, a professor at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and a Canadian expatriate. Additionally, her son-in-law is a former university teacher.
The body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. A General Diary (GD) has been filed at the Pallabi police station, and further legal actions are underway.
