Three More Suspected Measles Deaths as Death Toll Nears 1,000

Bangladesh recorded three more deaths linked to measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning, pushing the year's combined death toll to 994 according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest deaths one each in Chattogram, Khulna and Sylhet divisions were classified as suspected measles cases with no new confirmed deaths reported. This brings the total suspected measles deaths to 894 while confirmed deaths remain at 100.

Dhaka Division continues to report the highest number of symptom-linked deaths at 401 followed by Sylhet (155), Mymensingh (75), Rajshahi (92), Chattogram (65), Barishal (56), Khulna (36) and Rangpur (14).

During the same period 1,043 new suspected measles cases were reported nationwide with 954 patients hospitalized: Dhaka (319), Chattogram (238), Barishal (116), Sylhet (112), Mymensingh (48), Khulna (85), Rajshahi (23) and Rangpur (13).

Additionally, 55 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases were recorded, raising the total confirmed infections to 19,696. The cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide now stands at 164,148.

Since the DGHS began tracking measles data on March 15 a total of 144,168 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalized of whom 138,772 have recovered.
