An old building of the Gadaipur Sub-Health Centre in Paikgacha municipality has remained abandoned for decades and is now in a severely dilapidated condition.
Once used to provide healthcare services, the government-owned structure has gradually deteriorated after years without regular use or maintenance. Trees and vegetation have grown through parts of the roof and walls, while plaster and bricks are falling away from several sections of the building.
The deteriorating structure has also raised safety concerns among local residents, pedestrians and students who regularly pass through the area.
According to local residents, the old building was declared abandoned around three decades ago after it became unsuitable for use. A new building was subsequently constructed beside it to continue healthcare services.
Since then, the old structure has remained unused. However, despite the passage of nearly 30 years, locals say they have seen no effective initiative to remove, renovate or otherwise manage the abandoned building.
A visit to the site found cracks and visible damage in different parts of the structure. Large trees have grown on the roof and walls, while plaster has fallen away in several places, exposing bricks underneath.
Prolonged exposure to rain and natural weathering appears to have further weakened various parts of the structure and its construction materials.
Although the building is abandoned, movement around it has not stopped. Local residents, pedestrians and students continue to use the surrounding area every day, creating concerns that a sudden collapse of part of the structure could cause an accident.
Leaving a government building unused for such a long period can result in the gradual loss of structural integrity. Doors, windows, wood, bricks, metal and other construction materials can also deteriorate over time.
Locals say public money was spent to construct the Gadaipur Sub-Health Centre building, and the continued deterioration of the structure means a portion of that public investment is now at risk of being lost.
The long-standing abandonment has also raised questions about when the building was officially declared unusable, what measures were taken afterward and whether any formal process was initiated for its removal.
Residents are calling for an urgent inspection of the abandoned building to assess its current condition.
They believe that if the structure can be renovated and put to productive use, the necessary steps should be taken. If it is no longer safe or economically viable to preserve, they want it removed in accordance with government regulations.
They also say a prompt decision would help prevent further damage to public property while reducing the potential safety risks faced by pedestrians and residents in the area.
