Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed all concerned authorities to ensure pollution-free rivers and a clean also liveable environment for future generations.
"Alongside government efforts, we must strive to leave pollution-free rivers and a liveable environment for the next generation. We cannot simply wait for directives, we must also act out of our own sense of responsibility" he said.
He was speaking at a review meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday morning, focused on pollution control, waste removal, river conservation and development of circular waterways around Dhaka.
According to the Prime Minister's Assistant Press Secretary Gazi Shahriar Pamir, the meeting reviewed measures to reduce pollution and clear waste from the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu and Shitalakkhya rivers, along with adjoining canals and drains. Discussions also covered ensuring proper navigability with restoring natural water flow and improving Dhaka's existing circular waterways.
The Prime Minister instructed authorities to swiftly implement previously adopted plans also emphasizing stronger coordination among relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to speed up progress.
The meeting was attended by several cabinet members, including LGRD Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Industries Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, along with several state ministers, senior government officials and administrators from Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur city corporations.
