A court in Bhola has granted bail to Bibi Sawda, a female activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, following her arrest for alleged anti-state activities on social media.
Bhola Judicial Magistrate Sourav Roy Mithu passed the order around 11:30 am on Tuesday. Court Police Inspector Sheikh Md. Nasir Uddin confirmed the development.
Earlier, the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the District Detective Police detained Sawda from her Western Para residence on Sunday night. Police officials stated that she was accused of posting defamatory content targeting high-level state officials, including the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, on her Facebook profile.
According to the court filing by SI Md. Jewel Hossain Khan, Sawda was produced before the court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The police noted that further legal action would be determined after a forensic review of her mobile device and social media activity.
Sawda is an employee of the Bhola Municipal branch of Jamaat-e-Islami. Following her detention, the district unit of the party held a press conference on Monday evening, demanding her immediate release and condemning the police action.
