An "independent survey" method was demonstrated in Boro paddy fields in Naldanga, Sadullapur Upazila, to help farmers identify and manage crop-destroying insects.
The Upazila Agriculture Department uses this technique to distinguish between beneficial and harmful insects. Local farmers have shown strong interest in the method, viewing it as a promising way to protect their yields this season.
On Tuesday afternoon, Sadullapur Upazila Agriculture Officer Apurba Bhattacharya led a practical session at farmer Shahidul Islam’s field in Uttar Kata Pratap village. More than 50 farmers attended to learn how to identify and control various pests.
"This method reveals the real-time condition of the crop," said Bhattacharya. "Once pests are identified, farmers can apply the exact pesticides needed without delay. However, consistent monitoring is essential."
Assistant Plant Protection Officer Abdur Rob emphasized that timely intervention is key to a successful harvest. He noted that proper field care, including precise fertilizer and pesticide application, is necessary to achieve desired yields.
Uttam Kumar, the Deputy Assistant Agricultural Officer for the area, explained the process: "Farmers randomly select 20 clusters of paddy from the field. By examining these, they can identify which insects are present and take immediate action. It is a simple, effective way to safeguard the crop."
