The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) has detained former Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury. She is currently being questioned at the DB headquarters on Minto Road.
Additional Commissioner of the DB, Shafiqul Islam, confirmed the detention on Tuesday. He stated that Dr. Chowdhury faces multiple legal challenges, including a murder case involving goldsmith Muslim Uddin in Rangpur, as well as several cases filed at Uttara and Banani police stations in the capital.
"She will be formally shown arrested in one of the cases filed in Dhaka," Commissioner Islam noted.
The former Speaker was apprehended at approximately 4:30 AM on Monday from a residence on Road 8/A in Dhanmondi. While she is scheduled to be produced before a Dhaka court at noon today, authorities have not yet confirmed if they will seek a remand for further interrogation.
Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury made history as the first female Speaker of Bangladesh on April 30, 2013. She held the position continuously until her recent resignation, which occurred 27 days after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. She most recently represented the Rangpur-6 constituency following the January 7 elections.
