A senior BNP leader, Abul Bashar (60), passed away on Thursday night shortly after leading a celebratory procession in Mirsarai Upazila. The event was organized to mark the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country.
After leading a "joy procession" in Tekerhat Bazar, Abul Bashar was resting with fellow activists at the Union BNP party office (Zia Smriti Sangsad). Witnesses reported that he suddenly fell ill and collapsed.
He was rushed to the Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead on arrival. Local police and party colleagues suspect the cause of death was a heart attack.
Kazi Nazmul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zorarganj Police Station, confirmed the report, stating, "I have heard that a BNP leader died of a heart attack after the joyous procession. The matter is being investigated." Local BNP leaders, including Abdullah Al Noman, described Bashar as a dedicated and active member who remained committed to party programs despite his age.
Abul Bashar, a resident of the Chuni Mijhir Tek area, was a formal member of the Ichakhali Union BNP. His sudden demise has left a shadow of grief among local party activists.
