A housewife was killed and at least 10 people were injured in a clash between two rival BNP-backed groups in Sujanagar of Pabna on Monday morning.
The incident took place around 8:00am in Bhitbila Paschimpara village under Manikhat union. The deceased was identified as China Khatun (40), wife of Shukur Ali.
Police confirmed the incident, saying tensions had been building since Sunday night between supporters of Rafiul Islam Raja, a former Chhatra Dal leader, and the group led by local BNP supporter Islam Pramanik over control of the area.
According to police and local sources, an altercation between members of the two groups on Sunday night escalated into violence the following morning. Members of the Pramanik group were reportedly gathering in the areas when supporters of the rival group attacked with sticks and local weapons. Gunshots were also fired during the clash.
China Khatun was hit during the shooting and died on the spot. At least 10 others were injured and taken to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex and Pabna General Hospital for treatment.
Islam Pramanik alleged that the attack was carried out by Raja’s supporters following a dispute involving his nephew the previous night. However, Rafiul Islam Raja denied the allegations, claiming he was not present at the scene and described the accusations as an attempt to implicate him.
Local resident and former UP member Habibur Rahman said both groups are affiliated with BNP and had been in conflict over dominance in area. He added that tensions worsened after restrictions were reportedly imposed on movement between market areas, leading to the morning clash.
Sadiq Ahmed, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sujanagar Circle), said law enforcement brought the situation under control after arriving at the scene. The body has been recovered and will undergo autopsy at Pabna General Hospital.
Police said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the clash and those responsible.
