A local businessman was tied up and robbed of about Tk 5.5 lakh in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, triggering protests by residents demanding the arrest of the accused.

The victim, Samran Mia (26), a bKash agent and grocery shop owner, was attacked on Saturday night (March 21) while returning home after closing his shop at Jamtola Bazar on Eid day.

According to the complaint, a group of 10–12 men intercepted him on a rural road near Ambari village in Barodal Uttar Union. They tied his hands and feet, assaulted him, and took away a bag containing cash from business transactions.

Local people later rescued the injured Samran Mia and admitted him to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex.

In protest, residents formed a human chain on Sunday (March 22) at Jamtola Bazar, demanding the immediate arrest of the suspects. Family members and local traders said the incident has created fear among business owners in the area.

In his written complaint filed at Tahirpur Police Station, the victim named several suspects, including Khalek Mia (45), alleged leader of the group, his son Akash Mia (22), Minnat Ali (25), and Suhel Mia (28), along with a few unidentified individuals.

Speakers at the protest alleged that the group has long been involved in criminal activities, including robbery and drug dealing, and recently returned to the area before Eid.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminur Islam said police have received the complaint and started an investigation. He added that legal action will be taken after verifying the facts.
