BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that oil and commodity prices may increase due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
He made the remarks on Monday while inaugurating the Neha River re-excavation programme in Raipur Union under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila.
“It is not a good time ahead. The war is affecting us. Oil prices will rise, and as a result, the prices of essential goods will also increase,” he said.
Fakhrul noted that global supply disruptions caused by the conflict could impact Bangladesh’s economy. However, he urged people to remain calm and refrain from vandalising fuel pumps or creating unrest.
He also stressed accountability in development projects, warning that no irregularities would be tolerated in the canal excavation programme. “Every taka must be used for public welfare. Those involved in corruption will face legal action,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of the project, he said river and canal re-excavation would help maintain ecological balance and support local livelihoods, including fisheries and agriculture.
The BNP leader also criticised the use of religion for political gain, saying that the majority of Bangladeshis are religious but do not support the misuse of faith for business or politics.
Referring to farmers’ hardships, he said adverse weather has damaged crops in many areas. He reiterated promises of agricultural loan waivers and support programmes, including providing cards to millions of women to ensure financial assistance.
Among others present at the event were State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, and local BNP leaders.
