A Shapla leaf fish weighing about 6 maunds was caught in a net by fishermen at the mouth of the Meghna River in Ramgati, Lakshmipur. Locally, the fish is known as house fish.
The fish caught in the net was sold at an auction for 75 thousand taka. Fisherman Kirtan Majhi, who has been in financial trouble for a long time, is very happy about this. The fish was auctioned at the Barakheri fishing pier in Ramgati upazila on Monday (December 22) afternoon. Earlier, the fish was caught in the net of Kirtan Majhi at the mouth of the Meghna River in the south of the upazila.
Local sources said that 12 fishermen tied the fish with ropes and hung it on bamboo poles and brought it to the Barakheri pier from a boat. It was clear from a distance that the fish was large in size and weighed a lot. The fish was auctioned at the shop of Motaleb Bepari at the fishing pier.
Local wholesale fish trader Krishna Bepari bought the fish for 75,000 taka. The fish was so huge that 12 fishermen could not lift it from the boat and onto the shore. Later, with the help of fishermen from a nearby trawler, the fish was lifted onto the shore. At that time, a crowd of people gathered at the ghat area to see the fish.
Fishmonger Motaleb Bepari said that recently, Shapla Pata fish has been caught in different areas of the Meghna River. This fish is mainly found in the sea. The fish has come to the river due to the pull of the current. When the fish was caught in Kirtan Majhi's net, he brought it to his shop. Later, Krishna Bepari bought the fish at an auction for 75,000 taka.
Krishna Bepari said that house fish is not usually available. There is a huge demand for this fish. I hope to be able to sell the fish for a better price than the price at which I bought it.
Fish seller Kirtan Majhi said that I had not been catching much fish in the net for a long time. I was in financial difficulty due to this. I was able to sell a large lotus leaf for 75 thousand taka after catching it.
