Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to holding the next general election on February 12, 2026.
During a 30-minute telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and US Ambassador to India, Yunus emphasized that the interim government is "fully prepared" to deliver a free and fair poll.
Professor Yunus noted that with roughly 50 days remaining until the scheduled date, the nation is eager to reclaim the voting rights "stolen" by the previous autocratic regime.
The talk highlighted a significant diplomatic win for Bangladesh: a reduction in US reciprocal tariffs on Bangladeshi goods to 20 percent. Gor congratulated Yunus on his leadership during these negotiations.
Yunus raised alarms regarding the ousted regime’s attempts to disrupt the electoral process, alleging that millions of dollars are being spent by fugitive leaders to incite violence.
The conversation also touched upon the murder of young activist Sharif Osman Hadi, with Gor noting the massive public turnout at his funeral.
The high-level call included Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed.
