Bangladesh's preparations for next week's first Test against Australia hit a major setback after they were bowled out for just 54 in their warm-up match with losing by an innings and 38 runs to a Cricket Australia XI in Darwin. South Australian left-arm quick Campbell Thompson, just 22 and with only one first-class match to his name, tore through the batting with figures of 8 for 25.

Resuming the third morning two wickets down, Bangladesh collapsed within 17 overs failing to reach lunch. Opener Tanzid Hasan was the only batter to pass 20 scoring 22.

Thompson took the first five wickets, having begun his damage the previous evening, before offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli who took 6 for 83 in the first innings briefly interrupted his spell. Thompson returned to trap captain Najmul Hossain Shanto lbw for a duck and finished the innings with the last two wickets in consecutive balls.

"Sometimes you get lucky. It fell my way today" Thompson said, adding that playing alongside experienced teammates like Kurtis Patterson and Rocchiccioli had been valuable experience.

Thompson, who represented the Prime Minister's XI against England last season before making his one-day and Sheffield Shield debuts for South Australia, said facing top-level batters had sharpened his skills ahead of the season.

The result leaves Bangladesh with just four days to regroup before facing Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in their first Test on Australian soil in 23 years. In the first innings, Bangladesh had posted 263 anchored by a century from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, while Hasan Mahmud claimed 4 for 42 with the ball.

Scorecard: Cricket Australia XI 355 (Wyllie 130, Doran 76, Patterson 53, Mahmud 4-42) beat Bangladesh 263 (Mehidy 109*, Rocchiccioli 6-83) and 54 (Thompson 8-25) by an innings and 38 runs
