Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian armed forces' operational training department, was killed on Monday morning following a car bomb explosion in southern Moscow.
The 56-year-old veteran, who previously led operations in Syria and Chechnya, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a murder inquiry, suggesting the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, though Kyiv has not officially commented.
The Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was briefed immediately on the incident. This assassination follows a string of high-profile targets in the Russian capital since 2022, including the deaths of Gen Yaroslav Moskalik and Gen Igor Kirillov.
Investigators remain on the scene at a residential car park to identify the specific explosive devices used in the targeted attack.
