Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday chaired the latest progress review meeting of the cell overseeing the national initiative to plant 250 million trees within five years.
The meeting was held at the conference room of the Cabinet Division, where officials presented updates on ongoing plantation drives, inter-agency coordination, and implementation challenges.
During the session, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of timely execution of the programme, noting that large-scale afforestation is critical for addressing climate change impacts, improving air quality, and enhancing environmental sustainability across the country. He directed the concerned authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure transparency and measurable outcomes at every stage.
Officials informed the meeting that plantation activities are being carried out in phases, with priority given to roadside areas, riverbanks, coastal belts, and degraded forest lands. Community participation, including involvement of local government bodies, educational institutions, and youth organisations, was highlighted as a key component of the programme.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need for proper maintenance of saplings to ensure high survival rates and instructed the cell to submit periodic progress reports. He underscored that the success of the initiative would depend not only on the number of trees planted, but also on their long-term growth and environmental impact.
Senior officials from relevant ministries and departments attended the meeting. The plantation cell has been asked to finalise a revised action plan within the next month, incorporating region-specific targets and a digital tracking system to monitor plantation and survival rates nationwide.
