Iranian state-linked media have claimed that a US rescue helicopter was hit during a search-and-rescue mission for the crew of a downed American fighter jet, further escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
The semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that the helicopter was targeted while attempting to locate the pilot of a US fighter aircraft allegedly shot down over Iran. The agency published images said to show the damaged helicopter but did not provide independent verification or details on casualties.
US officials have confirmed that a fighter jet—identified by multiple sources as an F-15E Strike Eagle—was brought down inside Iran, marking the first such incident since the conflict began nearly five weeks ago.
According to US sources cited by international media, the aircraft had two crew members. One has been rescued, while search efforts continue for the second, who remains missing.
The White House said President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, but the Pentagon and United States Central Command have not issued detailed public statements.
Experts say the rescue operation likely involves specialised aircraft such as HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and C-130 support planes, indicating a high-risk combat search-and-rescue mission.
Images circulating on social media appear to show debris consistent with an F-15E aircraft, including parts of the tail fin and an ejection seat. Analysts note that such evidence suggests at least one crew member ejected safely.
Iranian authorities have urged civilians to report any sighting of the missing crew member, with local officials reportedly offering rewards for capture.
The incident comes amid a broader escalation following a US and Israeli air campaign launched on February 28. The conflict has spread across the Middle East, with Iran responding through missile and drone strikes targeting regional assets linked to the US and its allies.
So far, at least 13 US service members have been killed and more than 300 injured, according to American military sources. No US personnel have been reported captured.
The downing of the aircraft and the ongoing rescue mission significantly raise the stakes, as Washington faces pressure to recover its personnel while avoiding further escalation.
