The main access road to the historic Jorgach Hat in Chilmari Upazila has become nearly impassable, causing immense hardship for thousands of residents and traders. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra, the road deteriorates into knee-deep mud and stagnant water after even minor rainfall.
A recent site visit revealed that sections of the road are already severely damaged ahead of the monsoon. Large potholes filled with slush have made the path adjacent to the market hazardous. This has not only hindered pedestrians but also brought vehicular movement to a standstill.
Locals noted that the market is leased for over 10 million BDT annually, yet the infrastructure remains neglected.
Abdul Karim, a local businessman, noted that while the market thrives on Sundays and Wednesdays—with activity expected to peak for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha—the road conditions may deter buyers and sellers.
Majedul Islam, a local farmer, shared that transporting crops through the mud often results in damaged goods and financial losses.
Residents, including Rashidul Islam Nobel, expressed frustration over the lack of action despite repeated appeals to public representatives.
Ramna Model Union Parishad Chairman, Golam Anshek Tshana, stated that the road falls under the jurisdiction of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and that the authorities have been notified.
Chilmari Upazila Engineer, Zulfikar Ali Jewel, acknowledged the crisis. "About 150 meters of the Jorgach Hat access roads are in very poor condition. We have discussed the matter with the UNO and are coordinating with higher authorities for a permanent solution," he said.
