Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Monday it fired ballistic missiles and drones at two US military bases in Jordan King Hussein Air Base and Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Azraq. The IRGC claimed the strikes hit maintenance facilities and aircraft parking areas with causing heavy damage.

Tehran called the attack retaliation for a US strike a day earlier on Iran's Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. According to a US official and the American forces had targeted two IRGC rocket launchers allegedly being readied to fire sea mines into the strait in a vital oil shipping route. Iran said the strike killed and wounded several fighters and civilians.

Jordan's military said it intercepted eight incoming missiles over its territory. US sources reported no major damage with most projectiles shot down.

The IRGC warned that further Iranian setbacks in the Strait of Hormuz would draw even stronger responses and praised Iranians for what it called 183 nights of continued resistance.

President Trump had earlier claimed all mines were cleared from the strait and warned of "zero tolerance" for new mine-laying also saying US forces were using satellite technology to monitor the waterway closely.

The Iran-US conflict began with US strikes on Iran in late February. A June ceasefire deal brokered by Pakistan and Qatar broke down in July after disputes over the strait with leading to a two-week US bombing campaign and a naval blockade.

It remains unclear whether Monday's exchange is an isolated incident or the start of renewed large-scale fighting.
