Farmers in Madhukhali, Faridpur are busy collecting Aman rice seedlings from local markets as the Department of Agricultural Extension expects this year's planting target to be surpassed across the upazila's 11 unions and one municipality.

Crowds of farmers have gathered at Madhukhali Sadar and Kamarkhali Hat, the two largest markets in the area to buy seedlings. On Monday, a load of seedlings sold for Tk.2,500 to 5,000 with transport costing an extra Tk 20-30 per load.

Samad Sheikh, a seedling seller at Madhukhali Hat, said supply in the market is high and buyers are choosing seedlings based on personal preference. Market tax collector Md. Emon Sheikh added that seedling imports have been strong with trading continuing from morning to evening as buyers seek quality stock.

Madhukhali Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Mahabub Elahi said several rice varieties including BRRI-87, 37, 75 and BINA-7 are typically planted between July and mid-September. By the end of August, Aman seedlings had already been planted on 8,680 hectares using various methods including early floating seedlings. Planting will continue through September.

This year's target for the upazila is 8,760 hectares, compared to 8,660 hectares planted last season. With favorable rainfall and planting still underway this month the Agriculture Department is optimistic the target will be exceeded.
