An 11-party political alliance has announced a protest rally and procession in Dhaka on April 4, demanding implementation of the referendum verdict and constitutional reforms.
The announcement was made by alliance coordinator AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad at a press briefing following a meeting held in Gulshan on April 2.
According to the alliance, the rally will take place at 5:00pm at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
The meeting was chaired by Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a key figure in the alliance.
The alliance called for Immediate implementation of the referendum mandate, Formation of a constitutional reform council and structural reforms to the constitution through public consent.
Leaders stressed that constitutional reform should be carried out through a referendum, not through parliamentary amendments alone.
Azad alleged that the government is ignoring the public mandate and attempting to amend the constitution in a way that could undermine its fundamental structure. He warned that such steps may lead to authoritarian governance.
He also criticised the government over ongoing energy crisis, deteriorating law and order, partial online classes in educational institutions.
The alliance warned that failure to act on their demands would lead to wider street protests. It also announced plans for public outreach, including leaflet distribution and awareness campaigns.
A high-level meeting is scheduled for April 7, where the alliance is expected to announce a broader movement plan if their demands are not met.
