At least six policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC), were injured in Chattogram's Khulshi area early Friday when supporters of a notorious criminal attacked a police raid team. The prime suspect, Wakil Hossain alias Boga (42), managed to escape through a secret tunnel hidden inside his home.
The clash occurred around 4:30 am in the Wireless Colony area. When a team from the Khulshi Police Station arrived to arrest Boga and his followers immediately set up road barricades and hurled bricks, stones and crude bombs at the officers. The mob also vandalized the OC’s official vehicle. In self-defense the police fired sound grenades and rubber bullets to bring the volatile situation under control.
During a subsequent search of the residence police discovered the hidden tunnel used for Boga's getaway. Officials noted that the fugitive later taunted and threatened police officers via mobile and video calls.
Khulshi Police Station OC Mohammad Abdur Rahim stated that the attack was clearly pre-planned. Boga is a known terror in the Khulshi, Pahartali and Akbar Shah areas with 17 active criminal cases against him involving extortion, drug trafficking and arms charges. Most recently, he was named as the prime suspect in the kidnapping and physical assault of a lecturer from Pahartali Degree College.
Police have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the fugitive and are taking strict legal action against those who orchestrated the attack on law enforcement.
