In India, weight-loss injections like Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro have become a growing trend among soon-to-be brides and some grooms seeking rapid slimming before their weddings.
Clinics are offering “Mounjaro bride” packages combining guided nutrition, workouts, and injectable treatment, alongside traditional pre-wedding beauty services.
Doctors report a surge in inquiries, with around 20% of recent requests for obesity drugs coming from brides, often specifying their wedding timelines. Patients shared how societal pressure and expectations to look a certain way at weddings influenced their decision to use Mounjaro and similar GLP-1 drugs, sometimes achieving weight loss of 10–15 kg.
While the drugs are approved in India for obesity and diabetes, experts warn against cosmetic misuse, emphasizing medical supervision and lifestyle changes. With local companies introducing cheaper versions of semaglutide-based medicines, regulators are increasing scrutiny to prevent unauthorized sales.
The pre-wedding weight-loss trend highlights societal pressures around appearance in India’s wedding culture, as well as the rapid adoption of newer pharmaceutical solutions.
