Deepika Padukone, a leading figure in Indian cinema, has announced a deliberate shift in her career focus, stating that the traditional metrics of success specifically massive box-office collections no longer motivate her. This change in priority is driven by a desire for creative authenticity and an insistence on better industry work culture.

In a conversation with Harper's Bazaar, Padukone explained that her goals have evolved beyond mere fame and commercial success: She stated, "It's not about doing Rs100-crore films, or even Rs500–600 crore ones." She stressed that "throwing money at you is enough" is a false assumption, and that she will support projects she believes in, even if they are not massive commercial ventures.

The actor now chooses projects based on whether they "feel genuine" to her personal values and creative instincts.

This commitment was demonstrated recently when she reportedly exited two major films with Prabhas Spirit and Kalki 2898 AD due to her strict insistence on reasonable working hours and fair pay.

Padukone is now focusing her energy on empowering others and improving the film industry's environment.

Through her production banner, KA Productions (which produced Chhapaak), she finds fulfillment in nurturing emerging talent. She said her focus is on "nurturing storytellers—writers, directors, even emerging producers."

As one of the highest-earning actors, her move is coupled with a strong critique of the industry's prevalent culture of burnout. She asserted that overworking has been "normalised" and confused with dedication, arguing that "The human body and mind need only eight hours of work a day." Her new approach marks a significant reimagining of success in the film industry, prioritizing authenticity, well-being, and long-term creative purpose over chasing massive commercial ventures.
