A 38-year-old man was hacked to death in Faridpur city’s Station Bazar area late Monday night, allegedly over a long-standing dispute involving the local drug trade.
The victim, identified as Raju (also known as Batul Raju), was the son of Bablu Kasai from the Muslim Colony area. Raju, a father of two, was attacked around 10:00 PM on March 2, 2026. He succumbed to his injuries at Faridpur Medical College Hospital at approximately 11:30 PM.
According to police and local witnesses, the attack was led by Hridoy Sheikh—the son-in-law of a local drug dealer named Shilpi Begum—and four to five associates. The assailants reportedly cornered Raju, threw turmeric powder into his eyes to blind him, and then attacked him with sharp weapons, including meat cleavers (chapatis) and ramdas.
The attackers fled the scene after severing tendons in Raju’s legs and inflicting deep wounds to his right hand. Locals rescued the critically injured man and rushed him to the hospital, where he later died.
The victim's mother, Chobi Begum, claimed the attack was a reprisal for a recent law enforcement operation. She stated that the army had recently raided the Station Bazar slum, arresting drug dealer Shilpi Begum with a large quantity of narcotics. Hridoy and his associates allegedly suspected Raju of being an informant for that raid.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Nazrul Islam visited the crime scene on Tuesday morning. He confirmed that the murder was rooted in drug-related turf wars and identified Hridoy Sheikh as a notorious drug dealer with a lengthy criminal record.
"Our teams have been conducting raids across the city since the incident. We have already detained three suspects for questioning," SP Nazrul Islam stated, adding that the process of filing a formal murder case is currently underway.
The body has been sent to the Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
