A man has been accused of hacking his 60-year-old mother to death in Faridpur before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Rahmat Mollar Dangi area of Baitul Aman. Kotwali police recovered the body of the victim Samela Begum around 5:00 pm.
Police and locals allege the crime was committed by her younger son 30-year-old Rahim Sheikh. According to neighbors Rahim had previously hacked his stepmother to death in 2016. He served six years in prison for that murder before his late father secured his release on bail.
Authorities suspect Rahim is heavily addicted to drugs and suffers from mental illness. Neighbors reported that he frequently quarreled with his mother while intoxicated and had recently attempted to strangle her. On Thursday around 1:45 pm while other family members were away Rahim allegedly struck his mother with a sharp weapon killing her instantly.
The victim’s daughter Kakuli Akhter said she had breakfast with her mother before leaving for work, leaving Rahim asleep in a separate room. "I rushed home in the afternoon after hearing the news" she stated.
Kotwali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sukanta Dutta confirmed the incident. "We found the body at the scene. Relatives and neighbors stated the suspect is mentally ill and a drug addict" he said. Police seized drug paraphernalia including items used for consuming Yaba from Rahim’s room. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the suspect.
