The Chattogram Chemistry Laboratory of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has achieved a major milestone in testing capacity by receiving international accreditation for the first time.
The laboratory is the first BSTI laboratory outside the institution’s headquarters in Dhaka to receive an international accreditation certificate, strengthening its ability to assess the quality and safety of food products according to international standards.
On Sunday (September 6), Director General of the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) Md Aminul Islam handed over the accreditation certificate to BSTI Director General Kazi Imdadul Haque in the presence of the Secretary of the Ministry of Industries.
The BSTI Chattogram Chemistry Laboratory received international accreditation for testing several important parameters in imported and locally produced food products.

Officials said the accreditation will enhance the laboratory’s capacity to conduct testing in line with international standards.
It is also expected to help make BSTI test reports more acceptable in international markets, potentially supporting the recognition of Bangladeshi products abroad.
The BSTI Chattogram office has recently moved to a new 10-storey building, providing expanded facilities for its testing and related activities.
The Chemistry Laboratory currently has advanced equipment including AAS, HPLC, GC-MS/MS, ICP-MS and LC-MS.
The laboratory also has equipment for testing petroleum products, including viscometers, flash point testers, pour point testers and densitometers.
BSTI Chattogram Deputy Director and Office Head Md Momen Us Z Sajjad said the laboratory would be able to play a more effective role in ensuring the quality of food and other products by bringing new products and testing parameters under its services.
He said the achievement has created opportunities to expand modern, internationally compliant testing facilities.
“Especially in ensuring the safety and quality of food products and compliance with prescribed standards, this initiative will play an important role,” he said.
The accreditation marks a significant step in expanding BSTI Chattogram’s testing capabilities and strengthening quality assurance for products manufactured or imported in Bangladesh.
