A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Northern Sumatra early Tuesday, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

The quake occurred at 4:56am GMT at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located offshore west of Sumatra Island. The area lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most seismically active zones.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, authorities said.
