The foundation stone for a new high-capacity water reservoir was laid Friday (June 19) morning near Eidgaon Field in Ward 6 of Tangail Municipality. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku inaugurated the project, which is part of a broader initiative to expand the city's water supply system.
The reservoir is a key component of the ongoing Water Supply System Expansion and Development Project. The initiative includes two underground water treatment plants capable of purifying 350 cubic meters of water per hour, costing Tk 19.1 crore (191 million BDT), and two 680-cubic-meter high reservoirs costing Tk 64.9 crore (649 million BDT).
Once completed, the project will distribute safe drinking water through 14 kilometers of new pipelines across Wards 4, 5, 6, 15, 16, and 17. Nine production tube wells have already been installed. Officials expect the project to significantly alleviate Tangail’s long-standing water crisis.
Speaking at the event, Minister Tuku—who also represents the Tangail-5 (Sadar) constituency—reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring clean water access for all urban residents.
"Once the overhead water tanks are completed in Ward 6 and the Ashekpur Bypass area, residents will have a reliable supply of pure water," Tuku said. "We have started this work to fulfill our promise of transforming Tangail into a modern city. I will neither commit any wrong nor tolerate any wrongdoing."
The inauguration was attended by Tangail Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and Municipality Administrator Sanjay Kumar Mahanta, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Adibul Islam, Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) Executive Engineer Md. Raisul Islam, and former district BNP member secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, alongside local residents and dignitaries.
