At least 14 people were killed and 22 others injured when a suicide bomber struck outside a police station in Pakistan's Swat Valley on Sunday evening. The explosion occurred in Kabal town, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa just steps away from a large public rally protesting the recent surge in regional terrorism.
According to Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan, the bomber detonated his explosives after security personnel intercepted him at the police station's entrance. The blast tore through the nearby crowd just as the anti-militancy protest was concluding, sending panicked residents fleeing.
Rescue service officials swiftly cordoned off the area, rushing the critically injured to a hospital in nearby Saidu Sharif. Swat Deputy Inspector General of Police Fida Hussain confirmed the casualty figures, noting that the death toll may rise.
The targeted demonstrators had gathered specifically to demand government action against escalating militant violence in the region, a former stronghold of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Speakers at the rally accused authorities of cracking down on peaceful citizens while armed fighters operated openly in the surrounding mountains.
The attack follows a deadly month in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which recently saw targeted ambushes and car bombings kill dozens of security personnel.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the bombing, offering condolences to the victims' families.
