Bangladesh Braces for 5-Day Rain Band Flash Flood Risk in the North

A five-day rain band is expected to affect large parts of Bangladesh from August 3 to August 8, bringing widespread rainfall and raising the risk of localized flooding, according to the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT).

BWOT forecasts rain across 50–60% of the country, with the heaviest activity likely in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Moderate rainfall is expected in Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram.

The rain band is expected to begin over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet before expanding to Rajshahi on August 4 and covering most parts of the country on August 5 and 6, when rainfall is forecast to peak.

BWOT estimates 220–250 mm of rain in Rangpur, 200–250 mm in Sylhet and Mymensingh, and 170–220 mm in Rajshahi. Khulna may receive 140–150 mm, Dhaka 100–120 mm, while Barishal and Chattogram could see 80–120 mm.

The organization warns that rising river levels in northern and northeastern regions could trigger temporary flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Cloudy skies are expected nationwide on August 5 and 6, with only limited sunshine possible in parts of the southern coastal regions.

Although no major weather system is expected over the Bay of Bengal, BWOT advises fishermen and coastal travelers to remain cautious, as sudden squalls and gusty winds may develop. The forecast may change as weather conditions evolve.
