Ariana Grande Confronts Industry Scrutiny in Cinematic 'Petal' Video

American pop star Ariana Grande directly addresses her critics in the music video for "Petal" the newly released title track of her latest album. Shot in the classic 1950s Vista Vision cinematic format the video offers a sharp commentary on the intense scrutiny female artists face in the entertainment industry.

In the narrative Grande plays "Pepper" an aspiring singer auditioning for a demanding panel of male executives. Throughout the video she repeatedly alters her appearance to appease their harsh and contradictory feedback—ranging from complaints about her lacking "sex appeal" to calling her "desperate" and "inauthentic". The storyline reaches a dramatic climax when a frustrated Pepper uses a chainsaw to eliminate the executives returning covered in blood as other women applaud her. A final twist reveals the entire sequence is actually a movie scene, suggesting the star's inescapable relationship with public performance.

"Petal" serves as the second single from the new album following her recent Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper "Hate That I Made You Love Me". Grande is currently touring in support of her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine with upcoming performances in Chicago and a final 10-night residency at London's O2 Arena.
