Three family members including a woman and a child sustained severe burns early Monday when a suspected bomb exploded in Bakerganj Barishal.
The blast occurred around 6:00 am in Dudhalmou village near the home of Shah Alam Hawlader. The injured were identified as Hawlader’s wife Hanufa Begum, their daughter Iti and their grandson Fahim.
According to local sources, the explosion originated from a sand-filled sack kept beside the residence. To extinguish the flames, the burning victims immediately jumped into the nearby Tulatala River. Local residents rescued the family and rushed them to the Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were later transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Jamal, Hawlader’s son stated the family was entirely unaware of how the suspected explosive device ended up inside their sandbag.
Police arrived promptly at the scene to collect evidence and secure the area. Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Hossain confirmed that an active investigation is prioritized and underway.
"We are thoroughly investigating the incident. It will only be possible to confirm the type of explosive used and identify those responsible after the investigation is completed" Hossain stated. Law enforcement efforts are currently focused on determining the exact cause of the blast and apprehending anyone involved.
